Ashley Simpson, Director of Children’s & Youth Ministries
Ashley Simpson grew up in the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina as a member of St. Luke’s/St. Anne’s in Roper, NC. Growing up, she was involved in youth events throughout the Diocese. She attended Diocesan Convention as a Youth Representative, was the Rector of Happening #55, and attended Camp Trinity, where she also served on staff for the summers of 2010 and 2013. She attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she earned her B.S. in Marine Biology. In college, she was a member of the Episcopal Campus Ministry Advisory Board and continued to be involved in the Happening Community. After graduation, she spent the 2014-2015 school year teaching Environmental Education at Trinity Center’s Sound to Sea program. While there, she also served as the Part-Time Youth Director at St. Paul’s in Beaufort, NC. While at St. Paul’s, she coordinated weekly EYC programs, taught Middle School Sunday School, and also coordinated Mission Trips to both Washington, DC and Glory Ridge in Marshall, NC. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her dog, Belle.
Clifford Badgley, Director of Music
Clifford Badgley grew up in Colorado and holds degrees in music from the University of Wyoming and Arizona State University. He has served as music director and organist in Lutheran, United Church of Christ, and Episcopal churches in Arizona, California, and most recently Raleigh, North Carolina.
Clifford is excited to serve in music ministry with the good people of Christ Church. He enjoys experiencing the goodness New Bern, and he is amazed daily by the graciousness of the people here. In his spare time Clifford enjoys spending time with his wife Marcia and their two dogs, reading, renovating an historic little house, working with stained glass, and sometimes blogging about things he finds interesting.
Ellie Roberts, Director of Church Life
Ellie grew up in Door County Wisconsin where she earned a degree in Human Development and Education from the University of Wisconsin. In 2001 she moved to Florida and in 2015 to New Bern, North Carolina. She and her husband Ed live in Greenbriar with their two dogs Brie and Cooper. Ellie has had a long career in Education and Non-Profit Management. She has been the leader for several non-profit agencies over the past 20 years, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, United Cerebral Palsy and United Way. She has served on the Board of Directors for various agencies as well including: School to Work Partnership, Connection Coalition, Local Coordinating Board for Transportation, and the Bach Ensemble. She was the Choir and Artistic Director for St John the Evangelist Church in Naples, FL where she worked for 14 years. Her contributions to the congregation included directing a 65 voice choir, classical concerts, liturgy planning and development of the Music and Arts enrichment programs which included music and art lessons for all ages and a concert series on the St John Campus. Her choir traveled to Europe on several Pilgrimages. Ms. Roberts is an opera singer and enjoys giving recitals/concerts for good causes as well as advocating for the arts and education. She has performed with Opera Naples, The Bach Ensemble, Pamiro Opera Company, and the Island Opera Theater. She is a member of the Craven Community Chorus. Ellie is delighted to join the Christ Church family.
Debbie Fodrie, Director of Growing in Grace
Debbie Fodrie grew up in New Bern as a member of Christ Church. She and her husband Tim were married in Christ Church and their three sons, Derick, Austin, and Taylor also grew up as members of the church.
Debbie attended St. Mary’s High School and Jr. College in Raleigh, NC and then went on to get her BS degree in Early Childhood Education and Reading K-12 from East Carolina University. She taught for 29 years in Craven Co. Schools and after retiring she was hired as a PreK teacher and director at New Bern Cooperative Preschool. This year she works as a part-time reading tutor for Craven Co. Schools.
She was hired as director of Growing In Grace after-school program in 2016 when the program began and loves working with the many volunteers from Christ Church that make the program work. She brings her love of children and her passion for teaching to this position. Debbie enjoys spending her free time with Tim at their camper in Stella, NC.
Patti Williams, Financial Assistant
Relocating south had been part of Patti’s plan and now being part of Christ Church her semi-retirement dream has come true. New Jersey had always been called home for Patti. She was born and raised in South Jersey just over the bridge from Philadelphia. Patti has many wonderful memories of family vacations on Long Beach Island. Patti has done some traveling, her favorite was a cruise through the Greek Isles with family and friends. Patti brings many years of banking experience to our financial assistant position. Starting as a teller, her desire to help people and her friendly personality propelled her to management. After fourteen years and many bank name changes, she decided to pursue other roads to happiness. Coming to New Bern has given Patti many reasons to be thankful. Her home here is halfway between family still in NJ and brothers in FL. She enjoys working in her yard, riding her bike, cooking for her finance, Gary and volunteering at Tryon Palace.
Betsy Downard, Communications Coordinator
Betsy recently moved here from northern Kentucky when her husband’s job relocated to this area. She was the Marking Manager for Omega Processing Solutions in Ft. Thomas, KY. where she successfully brought multiple methods of communications within the company under one umbrella with a uniform look. She and her husband have two adult sons. Betsy will have primary responsibility for the production of print (bulletins, the Messenger, posters) and online (Mid-Week Messenger, website editing, etc) publications for Christ Church. Betsy will be the lead staff member on editing and updating the Christ Church Website. She will also facilitate promotion of Christ Church news and events to the New Bern community.
Jane is a native of New Bern and a graduate of East Carolina University. She has taught dance and yoga for over 25 years, and now owns her own studio, Serenity on Spencer. She works with Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders each Wednesday during the school year.
Her daughter Carlee is a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Jane is a regular participant in the Contemplative Prayer group on Mondays at Christ Church.
