Good morning! My name is Frank Rice. I became a member of the Buildings and Grounds committee about five years ago when my
wife Kathleen, who was on the vestry at the time, encouraged me to get involved in one of the many ministries available at Christ Church. While on buildings and grounds I have enjoyed working with Kip Peregoy, Nancy Pryzbylco, Priscilla Miller, and Ellie Roberts. All of them are very good at pointing out jobs that need to be done for the church.
As a result of working on these numerous projects I was able to become better acquainted with many of the fine men and women on the committee. One of the men was the late and, in my opinion great, Les Broaddus. Les had worked in the building trades for many years and he was an excellent carpenter and handy man. Many of us on Buildings and Grounds learned a tremendous amount from working with Les. We greatly miss him and his expertise.
To give you an idea of the scope of the work that we do we have: Pruned all of the hedges on the church property; updated and installed new signage for the church and the church parking lot; planted new azaleas around the church; assembled and stained four new picnic tables; spread a huge load of mulch in the church playground area; Repaired and replaced swings in the playground; removed, releveled and replaced the bricks in the church walkway; Built shelves for the church storage unit. Inside the church buildings we have assembled new chairs for the library; Installed wall mounts for televisions in several classrooms; Installed bulletin boards; repaired doors; Done many installations of small items as needed.
Because of Covid-19 we will have to continue to take on church projects on an individual basis or in small groups. We are always looking for new members so if any of you enjoy yard work or have any “handy” skills you would like to share, please consider joining the Buildings and grounds committee. If you would like to join you can contact Carl Huddle, our junior warden, Ellie Roberts, our director of church life or Paul Canady our rector.
Christ Church has many ministries that do a tremendous amount of good work for our church and also for our neighbors in New Bern. You will learn more about these ministries in the coming weeks. For me the bottom line is this: When we volunteer our time and talents to buildings and grounds or one of Christ Church’s other ministries, we can help reduce the operating costs for our beautiful church. Our
volunteering can save the church money which can then be better spent in spreading the gospel of Jesus and improving the lives of
people in our surrounding community. Thank you!
